Eco Group have been working really hard this term on our ‘Sea and Pollution’ topic, researching sea creatures from the Blue Planet Series poster and have uncovered some amazing facts:
- A ‘Gulper eel’ can grow to 100cm long and has a huge mouth compared to its body size, with a hinged-jaw that can open and swallow prey much larger than itself!
- The ‘Dugong’ are more closely related to elephants than to marine animals. Sailors used to liken them to mermaids or sirens, hence the order name of Sirenia!
We also talked about our project in school assembly this week, and compared the depth of the ocean to Big Ben (96m), the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world (829.8m), and Mount Everest which is whopping 8,848m above sea level! We explained that ocean trenches in the sea can descend to huge depths, the deepest reaching almost 11km, and that only three humans have ever been this deep! Plus we launched a couple of eco challenges open to the whole school.
The Challenges
- Design a submarine to go deep into the world’s oceans, either on paper or made from recycled materials. The submarines will be added to a sea display that we’re busy working on.
- And/or, find out what features a deep-sea submarine needs.
Please bring submarines and or facts into school over the next few weeks, before half-term.
Thanks,
The Eco Group: Ronnie, Lauren, Demi, Aaliyah, Mia, Meisha and Noah B-C with help from Hilary and a few other students.
A message from Mrs Hollowell
"A big thank you to the children and parents for the wonderful send off last Friday. I have been so touched by your kind words, most generous gifts and the lovely special assembly. Sometimes words are inadequate and this is one of those times, so a big and heartfelt thank you will have to suffice".
With fondest wishes, Judith Hollowell.
Care for a Bear: Myton Hospice
A representative from Myton Hospice came to school this week to announce the 'Care for a Bear' fundraising total....drum roll....the staggering total amount raised was just over £500!!!! An incredible amount of money that Myton Hospice were extremely grateful for, so huge thanks to the children and to you for all your support.
There were also some fantastic bear names submitted as part of the 'Care for a Bear' campaign: Fluffy, Benjamin, Diamond to name a few. All of the children did fantastic jobs but there could only be one winner of the fluffy Myton bear and the lucky pupil, picked fom the hat to take the bear home for some cuddles, was <Insert name>.
Friendly Reminder - Play Equipment
Please can you remind your children that they are not allowed to play on the equipment outside of Class 1 before school starts each morning, or after school finishes for the day. Thank you for your cooperation.
